The FBI Files: Wendell Ford pt. 1

Wendell H. Ford was a larger-than-life figure in Kentucky politics for decades, serving 24 years as a U.S. Senator and as the 53rd Governor in Kentucky.

The Owensboro Democrat holds the distinction of being the first person to successively serve elected as lieutenant governor, governor, and U.S. senator. Ford retired as the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history.

In 1982, Ford was serving in the upper chamber in the U.S. Capitol. He was not yet serving in leadership, but Ford was on the rise – and with notoriety comes all levels of crazy people. In this first batch of documents secured via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, we see Ford taking threats via his Owensboro office from a man claiming to be Jesus Christ and Satan. The caller said Ford was a “Roman Emperor.”
